  15. <p>    "Maybe John Wheelwright should be in Stockholm," says John
  16. Irving, the former college wrestler who pinned the nation's
  17. attention in 1978 with The World According to Garp. Maybe, but
  18. Toronto turned out to be the perfect place. There one can be
  19. away but not away, close to home but not at home. The clean,
  20. well-lighted city on Lake Ontario is also where Irving, 47, met
  21. his second wife, literary agent Janet Turnbull. Irving and
  22. Turnbull were married in 1987, and maintain an apartment in
  23. Toronto's Forest Hill section. The author spends about a week
  24. each month north of the border, where there is no lack of
  25. literary companionship. Novelists Margaret Atwood and Robertson
  26. Davies are among his writing friends. Irving has two other
  27. homes, one in Vermont and the other from Vermont but in eastern
  28. Long Island. The wood-frame structure had been dismantled,
  29. transported to Long Island and restored among the summer
  30. retreats of the Northeast's most glamorous resort area. "I'm
  31. known as the eccentric bastard who moved to the Hamptons and
  32. brought his house with him," says Irving, a man who can take
  33. satisfaction in having done things his way.

  35. <p>    In wider circles, Irving is known as a modern American
  36. Dickens. His novels are animated by victims of society who
  37. grapple with issues such as terrorism, rape and abortion. Owen
  38. Meany goes a step beyond. "I'm moved and impressed by people
  39. with a great deal of religious faith," says Irving, an
  40. Episcopalian who admits that the compulsory churchgoing of his
  41. youth has had a cumulative effect. But, he adds, "the Christ
  42. story impresses me in heroic, not religious, terms."
  43. </p>
  44. <p>    As for putting Owen Meany's dialogues in upper case? Irving
  45. got the idea from editions of the New Testament in which Jesus'
  46. utterances appear in red letters. And John Wheelwright's
  47. inability to forget the country of his birth? "Even if you try
  48. hard to look away from the U.S., it is there in your face like
  49. a flag."
